Our bodies are designed perfectly to birth babies and make no mistake, it takes two to tango! Below is a wonderful video that demonstrated the “cardinal movements” or the movements that babies go through during the birth process. As you can see by the video, babies are definitely part of the process.
In the above video, you can also see how the cervix (the opening of the uterus) dilates or opens up. During the birthing process, some women may consent to a vaginal exam. During that exam, the care providers are measuring several thing: cervical dilation (the opening of the cervix measured in cm 0-10), effacement (the thinning of the cervix measured in % 1-100), station of the baby (how low in the pelvis the baby is positioned), and the position of the baby.
